Rutgers Community Arts is excited to offer a wide range of remote learning programs this July and August for participants in Art & Design, Dance, Music, and Theater. Now you can explore, create, and perform under the guidance of Rutgers faculty – all from the comfort of your own home!

Kids Create! Arts Immersion Children’s Camp

Open to students entering grades K-8

This summer, Kids Create! goes virtual with eight weeks of fun! Each day a new art form enters your home in perfectly-sized 45-minute interactive lessons led by Rutgers Community Arts teaching artists via Zoom. Children develop their imaginations and skills through drawing, painting, collage, movement, music, and creative dramatics. Fridays feature a virtual showcase allowing family and friends to join in from anywhere in the world! Each week’s offerings are unique, so children may participate in one or all weeks.

Art & Design

This summer, take part in a variety of Art & Design Programs led by Mason Gross faculty, alumni, and graduate students. Draw, paint, design, and animate, all from the comfort of your own home! Programs available for students ages 10–18.


Rutgers Drawing & Painting Portfolio Intensives
Open to students ages 14-18

The Drawing & Painting Portfolio Intensives are designed for students who wish to develop their awareness and abilities in drawing and painting, as well as for those considering applying to art school in the future. Students will be given project assignments daily and will also have the opportunity to develop independent projects over the course of the intensive. Participants will receive feedback on their artwork and portfolios from professional artists. Contemporary art and art history will be discussed. Instructions for taking appropriate photos of artwork for a portfolio will be covered. Students will need to purchase their own supplies.

Rutgers Animation Intensive
Open to students ages 14-18

An introduction to basic concepts, terminology, and principles of both analog and digital animation. Students will learn the historical evolution of animation, contemporary technologies, and applications of moving images within the culture. Both sessions have the same curriculum.

Design Lab 2D
Open to students ages 14-18

This course explores core principles of two-dimensional design such as balance, scale, and rhythm. Exercises bring awareness to line, shape, color, image, and type. Working both with hands-on and digital tools, students will manipulate imagery in a series of fun and inventive exercises that culminate in the creation of a digital poster. Each week includes an online video visit with a different guest designer.

Design Lab Creative Coding
Open to students ages 14-18

This course introduces HTML and CSS, the basic tools for creating websites. A series of short exercises lead up to creating an online ‘zine on a topic of the student’s choice. Each week includes an online video visit with a different guest designer.

Design Lab Motion Graphics
Open to students ages 14-18

This course explores sequence, pacing, and composition to bring excitement and meaning to moving words and images. Students gain experience in creating short animated graphics with sound. The group will look at examples and discuss what makes them effective. Each week includes an online video visit with a different guest designer.

Introduction to Animation & Character Design
Open to students ages 10-13

Enter a journey of character creating, world-making, and storytelling!  Through learning the art of character design, story-boarding, and illustration, students will obtain a basic grasp of comics, animation, and movie making. Students who are passionate about creating their own stories of fiction and enjoy working with others to realize their dreams are encouraged to enroll.  By the end of the course, students will have the option to animate their own characters. Basic drawing and observational skills will be covered to give students the necessary tools for expressing their vision. No prior drawing experience is required and all are welcome to be part of the community!

3D Model Making
Open to students ages 10-13

Discover how to navigate and create in a 3D digital world! Build your own dream house! 3D Model Making is an introduction to imagining through digital modeling programs, such as Tinkercad, SketchUp, and Blender. Students will learn how to model cars, airplanes, animals, and Lego pieces, as well as architectural and interior design. Through fostering an online community of young makers, students will explore modeling tools and features, the possibilities of making in 3D digital design, and sharing projects with others to receive feedback and support.


This summer, high school students enter our virtual Dance Conservatory, led by Mason Gross dance faculty and alumni. Weekly virtual classes are also available for young dancers of all ages! Programs available for students entering grades K–12.


Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory
Open to students entering grades 9–first year of college, prior experience recommended

For dancers interested in a collegiate-level experience. Participants develop skills through a rigorous daily schedule of ballet and modern technique classes taught by Rutgers dance faculty. A variety of other styles are explored in a series of master classes with renowned teaching artists.

Primary and Young Dancer Ballet
Open to students entering grades Pre-K-4

Primary and Young Dancer Ballet classes introduce our youngest dancers to age-appropriate, beginning ballet exercises in an energetic, creative, and nurturing weekly class. Students gain fine motor dexterity through activities that encompass story-telling and creating, as well as activities related to children’s literature and number counting. Students work carefully to build the fundamentals of alignment, placement, balance, balance, flexibility, musicality, and strength through age-appropriate progressions.

Junior Conservatory Ballet
Open to students entering grades 5+

The Junior Conservatory level introduces more complex barre work and builds a strong technical and artistic foundation by focusing on alignment, placement, balance, flexibility, musicality, and strength through age-appropriate progressions. Students explore more complex pirouettes and allegro steps, and use of port de bras with a defined sense epaulement.

Pre-College Conservatory & Pre-College Conservatory Apprentice Ballet
Open to students entering grades 7+

The Pre-College Conservatory and Pre-College Conservatory levels are designed for students who seek to build artistic acuity and technical endurance while preparing for college dance programs and careers in dance. Students learn and perform classical repertory in addition to ballet technique and pointe.


This summer, join Rutgers music faculty for a virtual Music Theory and Ear Training Bootcamp. We hope to see you next year – in person – for our exciting music ensemble intensives!


Music Theory and Ear Training Bootcamp
Open to students ages 14-adult.

Rutgers music theory faculty prepare students for collegiate placement examinations and for college-level theory and aural skills courses.  This program covers the foundational concepts of written music theory and ear training that are included in key signatures, time signatures, scales, intervals, harmony, solfege, sight-singing, and dictation.

Private Music Instruction
Private music instruction is available for students of all ages and stages, starting at just 4 years old. Individual instruction with our faculty of world-class, conservatory-trained musicians is available in 30-, 45-, and 60-minute sessions in all instruments and voice. Students must have access to their instrument of study to maintain a regular practice schedule. Summer 2020 instruction will be held over video conference.
