Weekend Planner (September 26 -October 2): Lots of Festivals This Weekend: Harvest, Art, and Music

Posted by: NJ Kids Team - September 24, 2013

Dear Friends,

Sometimes there are just so many fantastic family events and activities going on around New Jersey, that our heads are spinning - and it's usually that way during the Fall months. Autumn is the perfect time to get up and go: the air is crisp and clean, the sky is a perfect cloudless blue - we are just itching to pack up the car and head off on another adventure. The hard part is deciding what to do!

This is one of those weekends - the temps are expected to be in 70s, with little chance of rain, and there are endless farms to visit, hayrides and maze adventures, shows, festivals and crafts. But don't get stuck in the 'What Should We Do' part of the planning. Why not have everyone write down their top two ideas, put it into a bag, then chose where you'll go and what you will do! And how about having some fun with it - once you know where you're going, come up with a couple of activities that go along with, well, the activity! If you're going to a zoo, maybe bring a pad and some crayons and as you rest on a bench, let the kids draw some animals. Heading to a historical farm? Pack a 'period' picnic lunch. And why not have a scavenger hunt as you take a hike at a state park? After all, Fall is for family fun! It doesn't really matter where you go, as long as you are all together.

Here are a few of our ideas - there are way too many to list, so don't forget to check out our website at: http://www.njkidsonline.com/directory/category/fun-destinations.php

  • Make Your Own Scarecrow at Leonard Buck Garden, Far Hills (pre-registration required; Fee)
  • Enjoy the NJ Fall Harvest Festival and Craft Fair in Leonia: Live music, carnival, crafts, animals, and more
  • Visit Field Station Dinosaur in Secaucus - and get a discount if you're a resident of Hudson County! Or come after dark for a nighttime view of the dinosaurs!
  • Two for one event - the Pumpkin Palooza at Springdale Farms and Discovery Museum: Crafts, hayrides, pony rides, moon bounce and more - one ticket, two great locations!
  • Learn how people in the 1830's prepared for winter at the annual Fall Harvest at the Historic Village at Allaire, Farmingdale. Apple games, wagon rides, storytelling, period music and much more.
  • Create the perfect autumn pumpkin craft at Imagine That! in Florham Park
  • Make a leave collection as you hike along the lake at Double Trouble State Park, and don't forget to get a peek of the cranberry bogs at Double Trouble Village.

Have a great weekend -

The NJ Kids Team
