Weekend Planner (July 25 - July 31): Festival of Ballooning, Boat Parade, Family Fair and More

Posted by: NJ Kids Team - July 23, 2013

Dear Friends,

We absolutely love July - yes, the weather has been heating up, but there’s still a full month before school madness begins again, the ocean is no longer a polar experience, and we are all a bit more relaxed, enjoying a ton of family fun activities. And, of course, it’s National Ice Cream Month AND National Blueberry Month! Two of our favorites - so, come on, let’s celebrate these two scrumptious treats. There are dozens of ways to pay homage to ice cream and blueberries - here are a couple we plan on enjoying....

  • Head to a pick-your-own farm and fill a pint or two with freshly picked blueberries. If there are enough left over when you get home, make a blueberry cobbler (topped with vanilla ice cream, of course!) Alstede Farms is a great place to start - and come on out for Family Fun Day this Saturday, July 26th!
  • Take a tour of the cow pasture and milking facility at BoBolink Dairy. Sure they specialize in cheese, but ice cream is still made from milk, which still comes from cows. An interesting tour nonetheless - and afterwards, head to your favorite ice cream shack for a cone!
  • Pull up a chair, grab a bucket of popcorn and enjoy Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (in case you’re wondering the connection, in the movie, Veruca Salt turns into a blueberry)
  • Visit Whitesbog Village- the birthplace of the Highbrush Blueberry (and a really beautiful 3 mile loop of the cranberry bogs and blueberry farm)
  • And if you want to be the coolest parent around - surprise the kids with ice cream for breakfast. Don’t forget the blueberries (and whipped cream!).

Enjoy! Here’s to the yummy sweetness of July!
