Weekend Planner (July 11 - July 17): County Fair, Free Summer Concert, Summer Festivals

Posted by: NJ Kids Team - July 08, 2013

Dear Friends –

Although we love the homework free days of summer, we still worry about the amount of skills the kids are losing over their nearly three month school hiatus.  To combat their academic lethargy, we always try to weave in a few educational outings (on the sly!) that will keep their brains fresh. For the fun of it, we’ve come up with our 'Summer Day Lesson Plan' – a place for every subject.

Math – For straight math exhibits, visit the Museum of Math in NYC; for a lower dose of math, head to the Liberty Science Center and the Infection Connection exhibit – use your math skills to understand how quickly and far viruses can spread.

Science – Enjoy a full day of science at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.  Walk through a giant heart, visit a space station, watch the flights of the butterfly, and much more.

History – Head to the New Jersey State Museum to learn about, well, NJs history.  Nearby is the Old Barracks Museum for a bit of revolutionary war history.

Art – There are several exhibits at the Newark Museum that should interest the kids, from Tiaras to toe rings (Asian ornaments) to Glitter and Gold and Pots of Silver and Gold.

Civics – A visit to the Bronx Zoo will not only keep the kids happy and entertained, but they can also learn about the world around them, and how they can help with animal conservation

P.E. – If it’s a rainy day, let the kids bounce away their energy at an indoor playground, or in nice weather, head to the Mountain Creek in Vernon for some Zipline fun!

Music - Grab a picnic and a blanket, and enjoy an outdoor concert. Many towns offer them weekly – and best of all, they are free!

Library – Read, read, read.  Sign the kids up for a library or bookstore reading program

Assembly – Take in a show – anything from a Broadway musical, such as Annie, to a local production

Snack time – Enjoy a Berry good time at the BlueBeary Blast at the Camden’s Children Garden this weekend!

Here’s to a fun – and sneakily educational – week!
