What To Do Memorial Day Weekend

Posted by: NJ Kids Team - May 08, 2014

 Kids Desssed up in Patriotic

For many of us, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to the summer season - time for backyard barbecues and long weekend beach trips. But the true meaning of this weekend ought not to be forgotten - and we should all take the time to recall the soldiers who died in the service of our country.

Indeed, there are so many ways to celebrate and honor our soldiers and our country this Memorial Day. Here are a few ideas:

TOUR A BATTLEFIELD and see firsthand one of the dozens of revolutionary war battle sites throughout NJ where our soldiers fought for the birth of our nation. Suggestions: Washington's Crossing, Battle of Trenton, Princeton Battlefield and Battle of Monmouth.

Step back into time at a HISTORIC VILLAGE, such as Historic Cold Spring Village, and learn about the life and times of a Civil War soldier

HONOR OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN DURING FLEET WEEK at the Intrepid  May 21-27.  Throughout Fleet Week 2014, the Intrepid Museum will honor our service men and women and open up Pier 86 for celebrations. Listen in on special Tour Guide Talks all week long and enjoy displays, hands-on activities and performances from our partners, including all branches of the military, from Friday to Monday. On Monday, May 26, the Intrepid Museum will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Pier 86, which is free and open to the public.  Pier 86/Hudson River, NYC.

GO FESTIVAL HOPPING!  Teaneck's Cedar Lane Family Festival is on May 26.  A family and patriotic festival celebrating Memorial Day.  American Legion Dr & Cedar Lane, Teaneck.

GO BEACH HOPPING!  Memorial Day Festival Bradley Beach Promenade  May 24-26.   More beach activities on our website.

Memorial Day Weekend FIREWORKS at Sesame Place  May 25.  Don’t miss our fireworks show, set to Sesame Street music! Rock out with Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster and Count von Count, as their music fills the air and the sky is covered with colorful bursts of brilliance. Be sure to watch us paint the sky red (and green and blue) from inside the park. This impressive display will certainly give you something to celebrate!  Fireworks will begin at 9pm.  100 Sesame Road, Langhorne.

Go FLY A KITE!  Wildwoods International Kite Festival  May 23-26.  The largest kite festival in North America taking place on the Beach at Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood and inside the Wildwoods Convention Center featuring kite makers from around the world flying their most incredible colorful creations.
TAKE THEM OUT TO THE BALLGAME!  Somerset Patriots vs. Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Baseball Game
May 25.  Join the Somerset Patriots for a special Day Game on Memorial Day!  The First 1,500 Fans in attendance will receive a Patriotic Baseball Cap presented by Operation Shoebox New Jersey.  860 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ

Enjoy a SPECIAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT  May 24-25 Featuring ReUnited and the Hi-Fives. The concerts will begin at 7pm at the Barnegat Public Dock. In the event of rain all 2013 concerts will be moved into the Brackman Middle School with doors opening at 6:30pm.  Barnegat Public Dock, Barnegat. NJ.  More summer concerts to come.
Catch a PARADE and enjoy the sights and sounds of America as you salute our veterans and their fallen comrades.
View our parades list.
Understand the hardships of a Revolutionary War soldier and visit a REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENCAMPMENT such as Jockey Hollow or Middlebrook.
These are just a few ideas - you can find many more below. Please help keep the true meaning in Memorial Day - at NJ Kids we celebrate and honor the service of the men and women in our armed forces. And to those who made the supreme sacrifice for our country, we say thank you - and we will never forget you.
